Sometimes, I like to make the shading of a panel correspond with whatever's going on thematically in the strip. For example, the shading in panel three is composed of squares and rectangles, which fits in with the pixel-y, robotic theme going on. I think that gives the strip a whole extra level of meaning while simultaneously being visually pleasing.
