For most of my strips, I always try to fill in the backgrounds with furniture and other household items, just so the backgrounds don't look so empty. But sometimes I'll decide not to put anything in the background, and it turns out looking more pleasing visually. It's actually nicer to look at something that's less cluttered and claustrophobic  But it still looks empty to me, so I add shading anyway, but I try to remember not to overdo things more now.
