I'm going to guess that because ripe oranges were green-colored until only recently the fruit was named after the color green at first, then in honor of the Dutch royal family it was decided the fruit would be more appealing and exotic (the Spanish influence in the Netherlands) if it were colored orange. Then the fruit was renamed "orange," and the name stuck. The color orange was always orange, naturally. That's my guess.
